What Is a Money Piece and Is It the Same as Face Framing?

The short answer

A money piece is deliberate, high-contrast lift on the two front sections only, usually two to three levels brighter than the rest of the hair. Face framing is broader and softer: it brightens the perimeter of the face and blends back into the mid-lengths. Money piece means contrast on purpose; face framing means brightness without a visible edge.

Which one is the client asking for

If the client points at the front of the hair and says "brighter here", they usually want a money piece. If they run a hand from the jaw forward and want the whole face to look lit, they want face framing.

Ask which they would rather live with: a visible stripe of brightness, or brightness they cannot trace. That question settles it faster than any photo.

Frequently asked

Can a money piece be done on dark hair?

Yes, but it needs real lift, so plan for a two-step application and a toner. On level 2 to 3 hair the lift is more likely to go warm, so blending is not optional.

Does a money piece need a toner?

Almost always. The front sections are the most visible part of the head, so exposed warmth shows there first.
