What Formula Covers Resistant Grey?
The short answer
Cover resistant grey with permanent colour one level lighter than the target, mixed with 20 volume at a 1:1 ratio and processed for the full manufacturer time. When grey is over seventy percent, add a natural or base series at roughly half the mix so the coverage reads solid rather than transparent.
Updated
The mix
- 1Target the level one step lighter than the client asked for, because grey has no natural pigment to support the shade.
- 2Mix permanent colour with 20 volume at 1:1 unless the tube states otherwise.
- 3For grey over seventy percent, build the mix as roughly half natural or base series and half fashion shade.
- 4Apply to the resistant areas first and process for the full stated time. Grey does not develop early.
Why grey goes hot or misses
Grey loses pigment, so what is left behind when you lift it reads warm far faster than pigmented hair. That warmth is not the formula going wrong; it is the undertone becoming visible without enough base to cover it.
A miss is different: a patchy result usually means uneven application or hair that was not fully saturated, not a weak formula. Check saturation before you check the developer.

Should I pre-soften grey before colouring?
Only on genuinely resistant, coarse grey that has failed coverage before. Routine pre-softening risks scalp irritation for a benefit most clients do not need.
How often does resistant grey need a root retouch?
Every three to four weeks for full coverage, which is why many stylists move clients to a slightly softer, more translucent cover after the first visit.
