What Formula Takes Dark Hair to Blonde Safely?
The short answer
Take dark hair to blonde in stages: lift with lightener and 20 volume rather than one high-lift pass, stop once the target level is reached with the band removed, then tone. Reaching level nine or ten from a level three usually needs two sessions spaced two to three weeks apart.
Updated
Stage one: lift
- 1Assess the natural level and count the steps to the target. Three or more steps means two sessions, so say so before you start.
- 2Apply lightener with 20 volume to the darkest areas first, working in thin sections and keeping the scalp clear where possible.
- 3Check development every five to ten minutes. Lift does not slow down once it starts; it accelerates.
- 4Remove the product when the band is gone and the underlying tone is yellow rather than orange.
Stage two: tone
Freshly lifted hair is porous and cool-toned by comparison with the target, so the toner should be built slightly warmer than the finished look you want.
Between sessions, send the client home with a bonding treatment and a note about what the second appointment will cover. A staged lift fails on expectation, not chemistry.
Frequently asked
Can level 3 hair reach platinum blonde in one session?
Rarely without unacceptable damage. Two sessions with a bond builder in the mix is the realistic route, and a third if the client wants the very palest platinum.
What developer should I use with lightener for a big lift?
20 volume. Higher volumes do not lift proportionally faster, they damage proportionally more.
