Do Different Brands of Developer Work Differently?

The short answer

Yes, subtly. Volume is standardised, but stabilisers, viscosity and buffering differ between manufacturers, so the same 20 volume from two brands can lift at slightly different speeds and feel different to apply. Brand-matched developer removes that variable; mixing brands is workable but adds an unknown to any corrective service.

ViscosityNoAffects control on fine sections

BufferingNoAffects irritation on scalp

When it matters, and when it does not

For a routine deposit or a standard grey cover, the differences are small enough to ignore. For a corrective lift through multiple levels, they are not, because the development curve is what you are relying on.

The simplest policy: match the developer to the colour manufacturer for anything involving lightener or more than two levels of lift.

Frequently asked

Is 20 volume the same everywhere?

Chemically, 20 volume means the same hydrogen peroxide concentration. The formulation around it changes how predictably it behaves.

Does using the wrong developer brand damage hair?

Not directly. The risk is unpredictability — uneven development is how a lift overshoots in one area and stops short in another.
